Originally developed by enslaved peoples brought to the once-uninhabited Cabo Verde islands along the West African coast by the Portuguese, Kriolu endured a history of suppression by colonizers. Despite initially being an oral language, written forms emerged centuries later due to its phonemic nature, incorporating influences from languages like Portuguese. The standardization of written Kriolu was officially established in 2009 by the Capeverdean government through the ALUPEC system [Alfabeto Unificado para a Escrita do Caboverdiano], increasing accessibility and uniformity in the language. This development has allowed for the creation of educational resources to promote Kriolu language comprehension.
